Kalakshetra Foundation was founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale in 1936 in Adyar, Chennai. It was established to preserve and promote classical Indian arts, especially Bharatanatyam, and to train students to a high artistic standard. In January 1994, an Act of the Parliament of India recognised it as an “Institute of National Importance.”
